Nós da comunidade vintage & pin up temos o batom vermelho como um essencial na nossa necessaire, mas muitas mulheres que não pertencem a nenhum estilo também usam bastante.
Hey little Swans! Today is a beautiful day for a historical post, don't you think? I'll tell you the story of one of the most loved cosmetics in world: the red lipstick. We from the vintage & pin up community have the red lipstick as an essential in our makeup bags, but many women who don't belong to any style also wear it a lot.

O batom vermelho é um dos itens mais antigos na história. Ele surgiu no Egito, e não foi a Cleópatra quem o inventou, como muitos acreditam. As mulheres antigas usavam ingredientes naturais para produzir o batom. As gregas usavam uma raiz vermelha chamada polderos misturada com cera de mel. No Egito, usava-se uma tinta rara produzida em Tiro. Porém, muitos dos ingredientes misturados à essa tinta eram venenosos, e à procura de produtos mais seguros, descobriu-se o pigmento de carmim, extraído de um inseto. 

The red lipstick is one of the oldest items in history. It was invented in Egypt, and Cleopatra didn't invent it, as many people believe. The ancient women used natural ingredients to produce the lipstick. The Greek ladies used a red root named polderos mixed with beewax. In Egypt, they used a rare tint produced in Tiro. Although, many of the ingredients mixed to this tint were poisonous, and in the search for safer products, it was discovered the carmine pigment, extracted from an insect.

No século 16, a Rainha Elizabeth I, a rainha virgem, tornou o batom vermelho popular na Inglaterra. Ela o combinava com pele branca. A maquiagem da rainha se tornou moda, mas apenas mulheres da classe alta e atores homens podiam usar o batom. No século 19, houve a vulgarização do cosmético e não era considerado aceitável para "mulheres de respeito" e foi associado com grupos marginalizados como atores e prostitutas. Em 1850, foi publicado em jornais que mulheres que usavam maquiagem eram perigosas. A aceitação de cosméticos na Inglaterra começou em 1921.

In the 16th Century, Queen Elizabeth I, the virgin queen, made the red lipstick popular in England. She coordinated it with white skin. The queen's makeup became fashonable, but only upper class women and male actors were allowed to wear the lipstick. In the 19th Century, the vulgarization of this cosmetic happened and it was not considered acceptable for "respectable women" and was associated with maginalized groups such as actors and prostitutes. In 1850, articles were published in newspapers claiming that women who wear makeup are dangerous. The acceptance of cosmetics in England began in 1921.

. Século 20 e Hollywood / 20th Century and Hollywood:

Depois da Primeira Guerra Mundial, o batom vermelho se tornou um símbolo de glamour e até mesmo as donas de casa começaram a usá-lo. Com a invenção do technicolor na década de 30, estrelas de Hollywood mudaram o conceito do batom vermelho. De vulgar a elegante, o cosmético criou um aspecto aveludado e tornou muitas atrizes de Hollywood icônicas, como Marilyn Monroe, Ava Gardner e Elizabeth Taylor. Nos anos 60, o batom vermelho perdeu espaço para tonalidades mais claras, mas na década de 70 voltou à moda. 

After World War I, the red lipstick turned out to be a glamour symbol and even housewives started wearing it. With the invention of the technicolor in the 30's, Hollywood stars changed the concept of the red lipstick. From gross to elegant, the cosmetic created a velvet aesthetic and made many Hollywood actresses iconic, as Marilyn Monroe, Ava Gardner and Elizabeth Taylor. In the 60's, the red lipstick was replaced by lighter shades, but in the 70's it became fashionable again.

O batom vermelho pode ser considerado a cor mais amada pelas mulheres nos dias atuais. Embora algumas moças prefiram usá-lo apenas para festas e eventos noturnos, muitas de nós (eu sou uma dessas) usamos diariamente para ir trabalhar, estudar e fazer compras. Hoje, o batom vermelho está a venda em diversos preços, em diversas lojas, e acessível a todas as mulheres.

The red lipstick can be nominated the most beloved shade by women nowadays. Though some ladies like to wear it for parties and night events only, many of us (I'm one of these) wear it daily to work, study and go shopping. Today, the red lipstick is sold in various prices, in various stores, and accessible to all women.
