Movie Review: Gypsy (1962)

Como descrever a lendária Rose Louise Hovick, mais conhecida como Gypsy Rose Lee? Uma atriz, estrela do burlesque, a mulher que colocou o "tease" em "striptease". Mas quem foi Louise antes de Gypsy? É o que descobrimos quando assistimos Gypsy de 1962, entitulado "Em Busca de um Sonho" no Brasil (péssimo nome na minha opinião). Baseado no musical de mesmo nome estreado em 1959, o filme narra a trajetória de Rose (Rosalind Russell), mãe de Louise (Natalie Wood), que procura ressuscitar o vaudeville durante o reinado do burlesque e da Broadway nos Estados Unidos. 

How can I describe the legendary Rose Louise Hovick, most known as Gypsy Rose Lee? An actress, burlesque star, the woman who put the "tease" in "striptease". But who was Louise before Gypsy? It is what we find out when we watch Gypsy, 1962. Inspired by the musical of same title premiered in 1959, the movie follows Louise's mother (Natalie Wood, Rosalind Russell) journey to make the vaudeville alive again, in a time where burlesque and Broadway were becoming popular in the US. 

O filme não é sobre a Louise famosa, sensual e revestida por glitter, mas sobre os sonhos de sua mãe (e o quanto esses prejudicaram suas filhas). Um dos motivos de eu ter baixado Gypsy foi a minha vontade de mostrar a minha mãe que artistas burlescas são pessoas normais e decentes. Minha mãe tinha uma visão muito preconceituosa sobre essa arte, assim como Rose tinha. E acredito eu que eu consegui o que eu queria, porque Louise era uma menina que parecia que jamais iria se tornar uma stripper. Sem mais delongas, vamos falar do filme.

The movie is not about the famous, sensual and sparkly Louise, but about her mother's dreams (and how these were toxic to her daughters). One of the reasons of why I downloaded Gypsy was my desire to show to my mother that burlesque dancers are ordinary and decent people. My mother had a very biased opinion on this art, exactly like Rose did. And I believe that I got what I wanted, because Louise was a girl who didn't look like she was going to become a stripper. Whatever, let's talk about the movie.

HISTÓRIA / PLOT: 

Rose é uma mãe que sonha em ver sua filha June (Suzanne Cupito, seguido de Ann Jillian), um ano mais nova que Louise, sendo a maior estrela do vaudeville. Nos palcos, seu nome é Baby June. O problema é que a menina está crescendo e a mãe se recusa a aceitar, ao mesmo tempo em que ela subestima Louise. É aí que entendemos que ela nunca teve a aparência de uma burlesca antes de se tornar adulta: Louise era forçada a se vestir como menino desde criança e era sempre uma dançarina de fundo, também vestida de forma masculina. 

June era talentosa, dançava com sapatilhas de ponta e era extremamente flexível, mas estava cansada de ser Baby June, além de não aguentar mais cantar "Let Me Entertain You", e o vaudeville estava falido graças à Grande Depressão. Ela queria crescer e ser uma atriz, então fugiu, deixando apenas uma carta para Rose. Em seguida, Russell performa "Everything's Coming Up, Rose" lindamente e decide que Louise entrará no lugar de June. 

Rose monta um novo grupo de vaudeville, ainda que essa arte estava morta, e arruma uma oportunidade de apresentá-lo num teatro de Wichita, no Kansas, que na verdade é uma casa burlesca. Louise conhece três dançarinas (Betty Bruce, Faith Dane e Roxanne Arlen) que a convencem de se apresentar naquela noite. Nasce Gypsy Rose Lee. 

Rose is a mother who dreams of seeing her daughter June (Morgan Brittany, then Ann Jillian), a year younger than Louise, becoming the biggest vaudeville star. Her stage name is Baby June. The problem is that the girl is growing up and her mother didn't want to see her as a teenager. Rose also underrates Louise, and it is why she didn't look like a burlesque star before: Louise was forced to wear men clothes since she was a child and was always a backing dancer, also dressed up in a masculine way. 

June was talented, she used to dance en pointe and was extremly flexible, but she was tired of Baby June, plus she couldn't stand singing "Let Me Entertain You" anymore and vaudeville was fading because of the Great Depression. She wanted to grow up and become an actress, so she ran away, leaving nothing to Rose but a letter. Then, Russell beautifully performs "Everything's Coming Up, Rose" and decides that Louise should replace June. 

Rose starts a new vaudeville troupe, though this art is now dead, and find an oportunity to book an act at a theatre in Wichita, Kansas, which is actually a burlesque house. Louise meets three dancers (Betty Bruce, Faith Dane and Roxanne Arlen) who convince her to perform that night. Gypsy Rose Lee was born.

MÚSICAS E ATUAÇÃO / 

SONGS AND ACTING:

Todas as músicas são muito boas, e é por isso que Gypsy é um musical de sucesso. Russell performa grande parte delas, e é impossível não se apaixonar por sua voz e atuação. As performances de Brittany como Baby June também são de fazer cair o queixo. Wood cumpriu perfeitamente o papel, e minhas cenas favoritas dela são a performance de "Little Lamb" (que mostra toda a inocência de Louise), quando ela se olha no espelho e diz "eu sou uma garota linda, mamãe", e claro, as cenas de striptease. Minhas músicas favoritas são "You Gotta Have a Gimmick", performada por Betty Bruce, Faith Dane e Roxanne Arlen, e a versão burlesca de "Let Me Entertain You" performada por Wood. 

Every single song is amazing, and that's why Gypsy is a famous musical. Russell performs great part of the songs, and it's impossible to not fall in love with her voice and acting. Brittany's performances as Baby June are also stunning. Wood did an outstanding job in her role, and my favorite scenes of her are the performance of "Little Lamb" (which shows all the innocence of Louise), when she looks in the mirror and say "I'm a pretty girl, mama"and, of course, the striptease scenes. My favorite songs are "You Gotta Have a Gimmick", performed by Betty Bruce, Faith Dane and Roxanne Arlen, and the burlesque version of "Let Me Entertain You" performed by Wood. 

A HISTÓRIA REAL E O FILME / 

THE REAL STORY AND THE MOVIE:

No filme, Louise e Rose fazem as pazes no final, mas não é exatamente isso o que acontece, e a mãe era muito pior na vida real. Rose sempre mentia a idade das meninas e chegou até mesmo a mudar suas certidões de nascimento e esteve envolvida em dois casos de homicídio! O filme não mostra que June se tornou uma atriz de sucesso da Broadway. Infelizmente, as irmãs não tiveram um bom relacionamento durante suas carreiras e só se reconciliaram pouco antes da morte de Louise em 1970. Gypsy também mostra que Louise iniciou sua carreira como dançarina burlesca depois de adulta, e na verdade performou pela primeira vez aos 16 anos.

In the movie, Louise and Rose reapproach in the end, but it wasn't exactly what really happened, and the stage mom was even worse in the real life. Rose used to lie about the girls' ages, changed their birth certificates and was a suspected in two murders! The movie doesn't show June as a succeed Broadway actress. Unfortunately, the sisters didn't have a good relationship during their careers and they repproached only a few time before Louise's death in 1970. Gypsy also shows that Louise started her career as a burlesque dancer after she became an adult, but she actually performed for the first time at age 16. 

PRÊMIOS / AWARDS:

Russell ganhou o Globo de Ouro de melhor atriz num longa de comédia ou musical. Wood estava competindo o mesmo título no mesmo filme! Gypsy também teve mais quatro indicações no Globo de Ouro e três no Oscar. 

Russell won the Golden Globe Award for Best Actress - Motion Picture Musical or Comedy. Wood was also competing for the title! Gypsy had more four nominations in the Golden Globes Awards and three in the Academy Awards.

Entrou para minha lista de "filmes para me inspirar". Não serve apenas de inspiração para minha carreira como dançarina burlesca, mas a atuação de Wood e Russell é algo para se espelhar. Recomendadíssimo! 

It's now on my "Inspirational Movies" list. It's not just an inspiration to my career as a burlesque dancer, but as an actress. Wood and Russell's acting is something to feel inspired by. I totally recommend this movie!
