The Bizarre magazine, first published in 1946 by the photographer and cartoonist John Willie, was one of the most famous fetish magazines in the 1950's. It was published at irregular intervals and was ceased in 1959. The content included photographs (having Willie's wife as one of the main models), stories in the pulp fiction style, letters from the readers and fetish-wear designs, some based upon the letters. The letters covered interests such as high heels, bondage, corsets, sadomasochism, crossdressing, body modification, etc. Bizarre was known for its crossdressing content and by not portraying women exclusively as submissives.
Willie was careful when portraying crossdressing and didn't link gender-bending to homossexuality. Though most figures on the magazine were female, Bizarre didn't have men as its audience, but also women, non-binary or "any in-between". The magazine also never portrayed a woman being tied up by a man - it was always another woman, which suggested lesbian play between the female characters. Willie was very attentive to the readers and looked to satisfy all of them.
The magazine also had a big variety of fetish clothing and heels. In 1953, Willie explained the mathematics of the high heels.
Not a surprise: Bettie Page was photographed by Willie for Bizarre and was the covergirl of issue 14.
The magazine ended its publishing in 1959 after being accused of pornographic content though it didn't show nudity. Then in the 70's, Eric Stanton revived the title, but this time as a comic book. The characters, plots and art were based upon Willie's illustrations.
