Entrevista com Andrea Kett / Interview with Andrea Kett

Olá little swans!
Hello little swans! Today I'm presenting an exclusive interview with one of my favorite illustrators: Andrea Kett. Kett's art has a lot of the vintage and burlesque universes and she lives in Irleand. I asked a little about her art and the world of her characters. Check it out:

Hello again, thank you for being up for this interview! So let's get started! When did you start illustrating?

"I have been illustrating and selling my work for about 18 years officially but technically I have been drawing since I was very young.I used to want to be a fashion designer but I ended up training as an animator (but I still like to keep my hand in on the design front as I always enjoy designing outfits for my characters)."

We all notice a certain inspiration from burlesque and showgirls in your art. How often do you go to burlesque shows? Do you have a favorite showgirl?

"My early work was definitely influenced by burlesque but I shyed away from it a bit a few years ago because Burlesque had become so popular and everyone and their cat was doing it and I got a bit sick of it (however its slowly creeping back into my work ). I did attend a number of burlesque shows when I lived in the UK,although I have not been to any recently. My favourite performers would probably be Sally Rand and Lili St. Cyr but of the more recent performers I like Immodesty Blaize, Gwendoline L'amour (I always liked Lady Grey Tease but I think they have retired their tassels as it were). I also like Narcissister (not for the faint hearted but definitely different-which is so important).. And of course there's Dita Von Teese too, her costumes and sets are amazing!"

The greeting cards and prints that you sell on your Etsy shop have a special touch: glitter! And we can also get a pack of beauty spots and paper dolls there. When did you have the idea of opening a shop?

"I opened my shop around 7 years ago (I had to double check I thought it was around 5 years...time flies) but before that I was selling my cards wholesale to shops like Harvey Nichols, Liberty, Harrods and Coco de Mer, Barneys, Nieman Marcus aswell as various boutiques and giftshops around the UK, Europe and the US. This was great as it gets your work out there and gives you a bigger audience ,however shops may be restricted by space and what lines they can stock but having your own shop is great as you can sell your entire range, including some of your more unusual stuff."

Onde você encontra inspiração para sua arte? /
Where do you find inspiration for your art?

"I tend to find inspiration in lots of things, as I mentioned earlier I collect vintage pin-up and burlesque artefacts. I love books ,everything from Agatha Christie to Enid Blyton. My particular favourite books to collect are childrens party books and vintage cake decorating books (especially ones from the 70s and 80s). Films are another great source of inspiration especially anything by John Waters, Fellini and Woody Allen. The Rocky Horror Picture Show was probably one of the most influential films for me, I saw it first when I was 11 or 12 and just thought it was amazing (I did some work for Richard O'Brien, the creator of Rocky Horror a few years ago which was a dream come true). Before I start drawing I like to pop on some of my favourite tv shows like Worzel Gummidge, Girls on Top and the Kenny Everett show, even after all these years I still get inspiration from them."

Some of your illustrations are creepy, yet glamorous. Who (or what) is your inspiration to create this mixture of horror and glamour?

"I've always been a bit of a horror film buff (American Werewolf in London and Dawn of the Dead are my all time favourites) so I suppose it just happened naturally combining horror with old style glamour (there is a lot of Zombie pin up out there now so it was important to take a different approach), plus its easier to get away with blood and guts if you add a nice outfit, it somehow lessens the gore and adds a touch of humour to it aswell (the new illustrations Im working on involve some of my favourite horror icons Vampira & Morticia Addams )."

Which are your goals at the moment? Is there any plan for your shop which you could tell us about?

"I took last year off to complete a historical and cultural studies course which was great but didn't allow me much time to draw so my immediate goal for this year is to get a ton of work done (I've had some really good ideas on the back burner so I want to get them done this year for sure). I also would like to do other products like notebooks, t-shirts and tote bags. The big goal would be to do a book at some point (especially a party one)."

Thanks for answering to those questions, Andrea! It was a pleasure to chat with you! Could you leave a message to the fans of your art and shop customers?

"No problem at all, I hope it sounded ok, it's always harder to describe your work than it is to actually do it! My message would be... A big thanks you to everyone who has supported my work over the years, whether it was buying the odd card/print form me or even just leaving me a kind message or a like on Facebook!"
