Book review: Wayne of Gotham

Hey little swans!
Hey little swans! How are you? Hope everything's fine! I can't believe we're in August already, 2016 is flying!
Today I'll be revewing a book for the second time (click here to check out the first book review), it is Wayne of Gotham, a novel by Tracy Hickman (but of course, Batman was created by Bob Kane and Bill Finger!). The book belongs to DC, which owns universes at comics, games and movies, and now created a literature one! This is not really recent, the novel was released in 2012, but I was really happy when I found out about it. I bought it as a birthday present for myself, but as I take a long time to finish books, this review is really late, but anyways!

SINOPSE / PLOT:

"Two men joined by blood but separated by murder: Thomas, the rebellious doctor and heir to the vast Wayne empire, and Bruce, his son, whose life is forever altered when he witnesses the brutal death of his parents.
The slaying of Thomas and Martha Wayne is the torturous point on which Bruce turns to become the mysterious crusader Batman—the genesis of a simple mugging gone horribly wrong. The Dark Knight's file on the case has long been closed, the foundations of Bruce Wayne's secret life secure. But these foundations are shaken when an unexpected guest invades the grounds of Wayne Manor, raising questions about the event that ended the lives of the mother he loved and the father he worshipped, and sparked his unquenchable drive to protect and avenge.
To discover his true family history, Batman must face down old foes, confront his only confidant, invade the evil heart of Arkham Asylum, and shoulder the terrible new burden of a dark legacy."

A EDIÇÃO BRASILEIRA /
THE BRAZILIAN EDITION:

I have zero complains about the Brazilian edition of this book. The cover is absolutely beautiful, though a little minimalist and the paper is great. Honestly, I think it is pretter than the North-American/original edition, which in my opinion, looks more like a comic cover than a book.

O QUE EU ACHEI /
WHAT I THOUGHT OF IT:

I was expecting something different, but it didn't disappoint me! Reading a Batman story on this kind of format gives you another perspective of this universe and more details on everyhing (as the story of the Arkham Asylum and its horrors, how do the batmobile and batcomputers work, etc). Besides, the novel allows us to meet Martha Kane and Thomas Wayne as never before! The story is divided between the present and the past in the late 50's, before they were a couple and during their 20's, and I believe you can imagine how I reacted when the plot revealed that Martha was (secretly) a beatnik! There are a few parts with a slight touch of eroticism and sexual tension between them, but nothing really "explicit", and it can't be compared to the eroticisim seen at some comics that Kevin Smith wrote (like, seriously, don't read The Widening Gyre if you don't like sexual inuendos and jokes all the time - by the way, just don't read this comic because it is really bad!). There are also new characters created for the book, which makes everything cooler!
The plot included many villains (some that aren't famous and new ones), but the only thing that disappointed me about it is that there's no bat-family. There's no appearances of the Robins, Bruce is completely alone and the only we get is a few mentions to Barbara Gordon. This bothered me a little because it's too much of the "Batman works alone" stereotype (that's a horrible lie) and Robins are actually very important for Bruce's story and mythology of Batman.

CONTRA-INDICAÇÕES /
CONTRANDICATIONS:

I don't recommend this novel to a new Batman reader, and the reason is very simple: too many names, terms and references that might not sound familiar to a "beginner" (check out here a list of 10 things that every new Batmaniac must know!). This book is not an introduction, Bruce is almost on his 50's, so if you don't know the bat's universe very well, I recommend you to read the "essential" comics (there's a nice reading list for new readers here) and watch a few episodes of the Animated Series first. So please, don't try to skip those essentials or you'll be as confused as John Travolta!

NOTA FINAL /
OVERALL RATING:
4/5
It's a book that every Batman reader should own, but it's a shame that there is no bat-family in the plot.

XOXO
That's all folks! I hope you read Wayne of Gotham and like it <3 there will be more next week! XOXO

    Beijos!
