Movie Review: The Love Witch (2016)

Olá meus little swans!
Hi my little swans! As promised, today I'm bringing you guys the review for "The Love Witch" movie, Anna Biller's original story and directed by herself. A low-priced B movie, "The Love Witch" pays tribute to 60's and 70's trash horror aesthetic. The movie narrates the story of Elaine (Samantha Robinson), a recently widowed young witch who moves to a small town in California, Arcata, to find a new, fairytale-worthy love and restart her life. Although, Elaine is perverse and idealistic, which takes her to get rid of her partners and always end up putting a spell on them. The fellow citizens notice magic in the air, starting a witch hunt.

PRODUÇÃO / PRODUCTION:

Samantha Robinson as Elaine

Even though it's an indie and low-cost movie compared to blockbuster productions, it doesn't make mistakes while making it look exactly like a 1960's technicolor screen. Photography, color palette, costumes, makeup and art production are perfectly made to reproduce a retro movie with such perfection. Biller wasn't only responsible for directing and script, but costume & scenery design and production as well. Although, two moments break the beautiful aesthetic: too much modern-day cars and an iPhone at one of the most beautiful sceneries inside that universe: the victorian cafe. They're irrelevant details, but I think that iPhones were unnecessary, even though the plot is not set in the past. In my opinion, the scenes that look most vintage are set in the magick shop and police department.

ATUAÇÃO / ACTING:

Laura Waddell as Trish & Samantha Robinson

There is no bad actor, but if you're not used to watch 60's movies, be patient since Robinson was supposed to impersonate the ideal acting from that time and genre - and she did it very well. She's not a Catherine Deneuve, nor Audrey Hepburn, but fits really well in a trash horror movie.

FEMINISMO / FEMINISM:

A self-proclaimed feminist, Biller brings this discussion to her works and Elaine is something in between of a feminist and a woman stuck by that old, romantic idea that she needs a man to be happy. It's really interesting how Biller works on this whole idea of a woman who is so confident about her sexuality and religion, but so naive. It's also curious how Trish, Elaine's married friend, has a so much better and accurate thought on patriarchy and the problems of a perfectly romantic relationship.

RELIGIÃO E BRUXARIA / RELIGION AND WITCHCRAFT:

One of my concerns on this movie was how witchcraft was going to be represented, but Biller did an amazing job and made it clear that she researched a lot about pagan religions. It's not a 100% accurate representation (since there's a little bit of fantasy, as you should expect), but many witchcraft-related religions were mentioned and differentiated during the movie. As a Wiccan myself, I liked seeing wicca being mentioned. It is not mentioned Elaine's exact belief, but most of the movie shows about satanism and black magic.

BUMP'N GRIND:

April Showers

My favorite thing about this movie: burlesque! It's a small and charming thing about it, but the beautiful April Showers from Los Angeles appears to tease us in the beautiful fictional burlesque house of Arcata, which is a frequent location.

VEREDITO FINAL / FINAL VERDICT:

Elle Evans & Fair Micaela Griffin as Gemini Twins
Não, elas não são gêmeas de verdade (!) / No, they're not real twins (!)

It's jaw-dropping when you realize how much Biller is capable of without the Hollywoodian support and budget. I really enjoyed the movie, I think the witchcraft, feminism and love idealization themes were so well-explored, and as mentioned a million times, the aesthetic is so good. But I have a small complain: I understant that it takes the "60's/70's script" thing to the max, plus the endings used to be very vage, but the ending coulb be so much better. I will not talk about it too much, of course, but I thought that it was so empty. I became a fan of Biller after watching "The Love Witch", I recommend it to any fan of indie productions and I'll be looking for "Viva", a 2007 movie starring Biller herself, and, seriously, a really similar look to Elaine's, since she wears the same blue eyeshadow as her signature look:

Anna Biller, "Viva"
